Serum

If you were traveling to a deserted island and could only take one skincare product with you, you should probably choose a serum.

Why’s that? Well, think of serums as multivitamins for your skin. They’re the main attraction of any good skincare routine, and the top priority around which everything else should fall into place.

What Is a Skincare Serum?

A serum is a nutrient-packed liquid product designed to be applied daily to your skin.

Many serums contain olive, avocado, sweet almond, or grape-seed oil as their base, which gives them a thin, oily (in a good way) consistency. Botanicals and other active ingredients are then infused into this base — almost like CBD-rich concentrates are infused into a carrier oil to make CBD oil!

How Serums Work

Those who really want to optimize their skincare routine can do so by getting specific and choosing a specialized serum.

Anti-aging serums may leverage the power of ingredients like green tea extract, caffeine, and/or retinol to address signs of aging; antioxidant serums harness vitamin C and E to combat free radicals; hydrating serums contain hyaluronic acid or collagen peptides to help the skin retain more water and moisture.

How to Use Serums

Using a serum is simple: just gently apply your favorite serum to the face, forehead, and neck area daily before you moisturize. Many skincare experts recommend a routine that goes in the following order:

  • Cleanse
  • Exfoliate
  • Tone
  • Apply Serum
  • Moisturize

No matter how simplified your own personal skincare routine is, just remember that you should apply serums after cleansing and before moisturizing.
